Xfinity reports that there are 11 nominations for films by and about Asians and Asian Americans in the Oscars this year.
Cutie and the Boxer is the story of Ushio Shinohara and his wife Noriko. Noriko gave up her career as an artist to focus on her husband, but their lives and careers take divergent paths. It is directed by Zach Heinzerling in the documentary feature category.
Also in the documentary feature category, the Act of Killing by Director Josh Oppenheimer focuses on Indonesia’s death squads. The men are held up as heroes in Indonesia, but the movie takes a critical look at their actions.
Hayao Miyazake is nominated in the animated film category for The Wind Rises. . Miyazake is a legend at his craft and he says The Wind Rises is his last film.
There were also nominations for foreign language film, cinematography, costume design, original song, animated short film, live action short, and sound mixing.
A glaring omission from the Xfinity list is Robert Lopez for best original song for the movie, Frozen. If there are other omissions, you can leave your comment below.
