The Senate is scheduled to vote Tuesday on the nomination of Vivek Murthy as Surgeon General, reports the India Today.
He would become the first Indian American to hold the position, and the youngest, at the age of 36.
Murthy co-founded Doctors for America which has been outspoken for both Obamacare and gun control laws.
Some including Senator Rand Paul have tried to block Murthy’s confirmation citing his advocacy for gun control.
“Dr. Murthy has disqualified himself from being Surgeon General because of his intent to use that position to launch an attack on Americans’ right to own a firearm under the guise of a public health and safety campaign,” Paul said.
Murthy is a graduate of Yale and also founded Visions Worldwide, an AIDS education group, and Trials Network,
“Murthy demonstrated that he is an excellent choice to serve as the next US Surgeon General”, said Senator Tom Harkin, chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labour, and Pensions (HELP) committee.
