Asian Americans in California have enrolled for subsidized health insurance under Obamacare at a higher rate than their population, reports the Mercury News (Photo from SF Dept of Public Health)
Asian Americans make up 13.7 percent of California’s population, but 23.1 percent of enrollees in California’s version of the Affordable Care Act, Covered California.
They also outpace Latinos who make up 38.2 percent of California’s population, but just 22 percent of those signed up in the program.
“It’s the only thing that has been surprising to us so far — the higher Asian American enrollment,” said Ken Jacobs, chairman of the UC Berkeley Labor Center.
Educational levels and comfort with government are just two possible reasons for this disparity.
The deadline to enroll in the Affordable Care Act is March 31 nationwide.
