In an issue similar to the SCA5 debate in California, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio and School Chancellor Carmen Fariña are proposing revamping admissions policies to better diversify the city’s elite public schools, reports the International Business Times (photo by Orinjuice).
Admission to the prestigious Stuyvesant High and 7 other elite schools in New York are based solely on test scores.
Asian Americans make up almost 75 percent of the student body at Stuyvesant, but only 14 percent of the city’s population. Only 7 and 21 black and Latino students were admitted this year.
“These schools are the jewels in the crown for our public school system,” de Blasio said. “This is a city blessed with such diversity. Our schools, especially our particularly exceptional schools, need to reflect that diversity.”
