A new street will be renamed in honor of Pvt. Danny Chen in New York this week, reports DNA Info.
Chen served in Afghanistan and committed suicide after being subjected to racial hazing.
He will be honored Saturday with the unveiling of the new street sign for Danny Chen Way at the corner of Elizabeth Street and Canal. The Organization of Chinese Americans and several other community group will hold a breakfast reception before the unveiling.
Also on Thursday, Tony-award winning playwright David Henry Hwang and composer Huang Ruo will talk about their new opera which was inspired by Chen. An American Soldier is set for its world premier in Washington DC next month at the Kennedy Center.
The program will be at the Museum of Chinese in America.
“It’s a really meaningful program,” said Maureen Hoon of the museum. “The topic itself is very serious and its historical and it’s also very much relevant to the immigrant experience, but it also showcases how culture and the arts can really champion issues or can bring some issues that are sensitive to the forefront.”
The event is free, but registration is required. The event is already filled to capacity, but there will be an overflow room with a live feed.
