The Hindu: White house rescinds ban on India apparent next prime minister Narendra Modi

Narendra ModiPresident Obama has invited Narendra Modi, the apparent next prime minister of India, to the White House, reports The Hindu.

The invitation apparently rescinds a nine-year ban on Modi from being issued a visa for his alleged role in the Gujarat riots in 2002.

The State Department confirmed the lifting of the ban when it said ““The Prime Minister of India will be welcomed to the U.S. [and] as Head of Government, Mr. Modi would be eligible for an A-1 visa.”

Modi’s BJP Party is expected to select Modi as the next Prime Minister this coming Tuesday.

The sweeping victory by Modi and his party has sparked mixed reaction from Indian Americans.
