18 Million Rising, a coalition of internet based progressive Asian American activists, took the unusual tactic of launching a fake website purportedly from Gap itself.
The group hopes to persuade or coerce Gap into signing the Bangladesh Accord, a pledge to improve safety conditions at Bangladesh garment factories which has already been signed by 175 signatories including Abercrombie and Fitch, American Eagle Outfitters, and H&M.
The website launched by 18 Million Rising, Gap Does More, satirized Gap’s public relations campaign on the issue. Gap immediately distanced itself from the website releasing a statement saying “Gap Inc. recently discovered a fraudulent website, www.gapdoesmore.com, and its accompanying social media property, (at)gapdoesmore. These sites are not authorized by Gap Inc. or any of its brands. We are investigating the source of these fake digital properties”
