Sharon Chang is taking a lot of heat for her recent blog post for Hyphen Magazine about why she wants her multi-racial children to identify as Asian, and not white.
Her four-year old is Japanese, Taiwanese, German, French Canadian, British & Welsh.
She doesn’t tell him he’s white. She tells him he’s Asian. Sharon shares the family history to her son of his Slovakian background and his white family members. But when it comes to racial identification, he’s a minority. He’s not white. He’s Asian.
Chang says its important to teach and prepare her son for the racism that he will face and the racism he will witness around him.
It’s important to tell him about how others will see him when they look at him and that he will never really be seen as a white person.
Read both her posts and share your comments below. If you’re raising a multi-racial child, how do you personally handle these issues?
