In a case of alleged police brutality that got a lot of attention in January, 84-year old Kang Chun Wong has filed a $5 million dollar lawsuit against the city of New York and the New York Police Department, reports Reappropriate.
Wong alleges he was roughed up by police after being ticketed for jaywalking. He became upset when police walked away with his ID. Due to a language barrier, the situation intensified and witnesses say police slammed him against the wall and into the ground, bloodying his head. All charges against Wong were eventually dropped by the District Attorney.
According to the Daily News, Wong’s attorney says his client has suffered permanent memory damage & emotional distress.
“When an elderly man ends up with multiple staples to close a wound in his head because of the issue of alleged jaywalking, it’s simply not right,” said attorney Sanford Rubenstein.
The NYPD said it would review the lawsuit, but had no further comment.
