US Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) has yet to announce she’s not going to run for reelection in 2016, but already names are emerging as to who’s going to run to take her place.
Matier & Ross in SF Gate report among the early frontrunners is California Attorney General Kamala Harris.
Harris, who’s mother is Indian American, has been up to now mentioned as someone favored to be California’s next Governor. But that can’t happen until 2018 at the earliest.
Her biggest rivals in any potential race for either Governor or US Senator is California Lieutenant Governor and former mayor of San Francisco Gavin Newsom.
Both Newsom and Harris, in a show of Democratic unity, hosted a recent fundraiser for the party.
Another possible candidate for US Senate is outgoing State Controller John Chiang. For now, Chiang is running for State Treasurer and Harris and Newsom are both running for re-election.
