Teammates mobbed St. Louis Cardinal Kolten Wong Sunday night and adoring fans in St. Louis screamed their adulation as the second base rookie crossed home plate.
Wong hit a walk off home run in the bottom of the 9th to give St. Louis a 5-4 win over the San Francisco Giants. The National League Championship Series is now tied up at one game a piece.
It was just a year ago when Wong was apologizing on the biggest stage of Major League Baseball. He made the final out of the World Series. Wong had been brought in to pinch run when he moved a little too far off first base and slipped as Boston Red Sox closer Koji Uehara picked him off.
He walked dejectedly back to the dug out as the Red Sox celebrated their world championship. The Chinese Hawaiian was so dejected, he couldn’t look at anybody and just gazed at the ground.
That night he tweeted an apology.
Sunday night was quite a different story.
“It’s was awesome, awesome,” he told ESPN. “I can’t stop smiling. Thinking of what I went through last year and to do a full 360 and be where I am now is awesome”
