Angel Island Immigration StationIn 1910 the Angel Island Immigration Station opened on San Francisco Bay. Approximately 56,000 Asian immigrants came through the Angel Island detention center upon their arrival into the U.S. Many were detained for extended periods of time.

It is often called the Ellis Island of the West. The main difference between the two is that Angel Island was the entry port for predominantly Asian immigrants.Angel Island Immigration Station4

Today Angel Island is a state park. The non-profit Angel Island Conservancy offers both guided and self-guided tours.
