Next Thursday will mark the 70th anniversary of the atomic bomb drop on Hiroshima.
It’s a day that changed the life of Huntsville, Alabama resident Haruko Lewis, 88, forever.
“Hiroshima. So beautiful. All gone. Gone. Dead, ” she said to Al.com.
Haruko speaks in short choppy sentences due to a stroke she suffered last year.
“Boom-boom-pop. Houses? Bah, bah. Gone. Gone,” she said gesturing with her arms.
She was 18 at the time when the first atomic bomb was dropped on August 6, 1945.
It was dropped five miles from her home where she was on the back porch on the side away from the blast.
She saw a bright light, then the mushroom cloud followed by darkness.
She would eventually marry a GI and her family would disown her because of it.
