A judge in the case against former Madison, Alabama Police Officer Eric Parker has declared a mistrial, reports WAAY.
Parker was accused of violating the civil rights of Sureshbhai Patel, 58.
This was the 2nd trial for Parker. The first one ended in a hung jury. The second jury has been deliberating his Friday.
Dashcam video taken from a police vehicle shows Patel being knocked to the ground and hitting the concrete. He was left partially paralyzed.
The jurors asked to be shown that video again during their deliberations.
The central question the jurors were unable to answer, was the leg sweep Parker used to knock him to the ground unnecessary force.
Witnesses called by the prosecution in the federal case testified the technique is not something taught in the police academy and Patel showed no signs of resisting.
He was stopped for questioning after police received a call about a suspicious Black man walking around in the neighborhood.
Patel who was visiting his disabled grandson told the officers repeatedly that he did not speak English.
Parker knocked him to the ground when he said Patel made a motion with his hands that could be interpreted as resisting and when he took a step away.
Two more cases are pending against Parker. You can read about that at WAAY.
