Boston City Councilwoman Michelle Wu was unanimously elected this morning by her colleagues as their new president, reports the Boston Herald.
Wu becomes the first Asian American to lead the city council and just the third women.
She’ll be overseeing a city council that is seeing a dramatic demographic shift. Two new women elected to the council brings representation by women on the council to an all-time high.
“We’re sworn in today at a time of historic inequality. This lack of opportunity has led to stark divisions in Boston,” Wu said. “It is against this backdrop that the work of city government is more vital than ever.”
