It was just in January when Ang Lee joined actor John Krasinski, fellow filmmaker Guillermo del Toro and Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs to announce the nominations for the 2016 Academy Awards.
Just three months later, Lee and other Asian American members of the Academy have been invited to meet with Boone and Academy CEO Dawn Hudson to discuss the offensive and stereotypical treatment of Asian Americans during the Oscar telecast.
The Wrap reports the meeting will likely take place late this month or at the beginning of the next.
“I’m thrilled that AMPAS has been receptive and working on resolving this issue and creating a forum to do so and being proactive with members,” Academy member Marcus Hu said.
The planned meeting was scheduled after 25 AAPI members of the academy including Lee and Hu signed a letter asking “how such tasteless and offensive skits” could have happened.”
An apology that followed was deemed insufficient by those who signed the letter, with some calling the letter patronizing.
