Former New York Police officer Peter Liang will pay $25,000 to the family of Akai Gurley as part of a $4.5 million dollar settlement reached by the city.
Liang was convicted of criminally negligent homicide after shooting Gurley in a darkened stairwell while patrolling a public housing complex.
Under the terms, New York City will pay $4.1 million, according to the Wall Street Journal. The New York City Housing Authority will pay $400,000.
The money is expected to be paid to Gurley’s daughter when she turns 18.
“We believe this is a fair resolution of a tragic matter,” a city spokesman said.
