The family of a Chinese American woman who they say is being held in solitary confinement by the Chinese government is pleading to the American public for help.
KIRO TV reports the family is renewing a media campaign they stopped at the urging of the China.
“It’s been almost a year, now, and they’re not willing to speak to us to even negotiate anything,” said Catherine Chan, the daughter of Sandy Phan-Gillis.
Phan-Gillis has been held on spy charges since last year when she was detained during a visit to China.
The family is urging President Obama to bring up Sandy during an upcoming meeting with Chinese President Xi Jimping.
The family says a recent letter they’ve received from Sandy describes the solitary confinement and mental torture she must endure.
They are also asking the public to write the Chinese government in support.
