The White House is teaming up with researchers at UC Riverside to compile and disseminate information to combat the model minority myth, reports the Press Enterprise.
Both are encouraging community members to submit information that brings to light the challenges that face many of the various Asian American subgroups.
Those interested have until Monday’s deadline to submit videos, infographics, apps, tables, animations and blogs which focus on data about Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.
The idea is to show why Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders matter and why they are not monolithic.
For instance Korean Americans have the highest rate of suicide among all ethnic groups. Cambodian American women have the highest rate of breast cancer. 30 percent of Vietnamese American children live in poverty. That’s 8 percent higher than the national average.
“In Orange County, we’ve been able to build such a strong community in Little Saigon that we don’t necessarily see folks that are suffering from poverty,” Nina Nguyen of Garden Grove said. “It just shows that there’s a lot of need when it comes to every community.”
