A Chinese company has bought Dick Clark Productions, given it control of some of America’s most iconic entertainment programs including New Years Rockin Eve in Times Square, the Miss America Pageant, American Music Awards and Golden Globes.
Wang Jianlin’s company, the Dalian Wanda Group, purchased DCP for $1 billion. He also recently bought the country’s second largest movie theater chain, AMC, for $2.6 billion.
The acquisitions have caught the attention of Congress. Some wonder if a Chinese company buying up American entertainment poses a national security threat.
This reminds me of the time when Japanese were buying up large chunk of American real estate in the 80’s. That set off alarm bells in some circles, but somehow the United States survived.
Some are wondering if the Chinese purchasing entertainment properties is a threat to national security. If the Chinese control our entertainment, will it become a propaganda tool for the Chinese?
“If you buy Hollywood, you buy influence, you buy the ability to paint a totally false picture, a caricature of the alleged benevolence of the Chinese government, which is anything but,” National Public Radio quoted Rep Chris Smith (R-NJ) as saying.
Shades of a red scare and yellow peril. It’s something Asian America needs to watch closely.
