A hip hop musician from South Korea who was scheduled to perform at SXSW was called a “chink” by airport employees at San Francisco International Airport, according to a statement from his agency Stoneship.
A translation of the statement published in Kore said They (Malik and his staff) were racially discriminated by local employees who imitated monkeys and called them “chink(s).”
Malik was denied entry into the country and his performance was cancelled.
Billboard reported Malik was one of 12 artists scheduled to perform at SXSW prohibited from entering the United States.
U.S. Custom and Border Protection officials told Billboard “If an individual is a member of an internationally recognized entertainment group, they must apply for and be granted a P-1 visa.”
