Fresh off her performance in the TV remake of Dirty Dancing, former Pussycat Nicole Scherzinger says she’s proud to be Filipino.
“Filipino Pride,” she proclaimed.
“Yeah, it’s everything,” she said to the Inquirer. “I feel like some of the best voices in the world are Filipino voices. I got my voice from my Hawaiian side, too—my grandmother. But Filipino people can sing, right?”
Nicole’s father is Filipino and her mother is Hawaiian-Russian. She grew up in a family that loved music. Her grandmother played the ukulele and sang. Her mother was a hula dancer. Nicole loved to sing, but her family had no money for lessons.
“So, I think it’s a God-given gift. That’s the only way I knew how to express myself, because I was shy as a kid. Growing up, I just loved music. I wanted to be Whitney Houston.”
She told the Sun she had a big crush on Patrick Swayze in her youth and said everything really clicked for her during the production of Dirty Dancing after a rough start.
“I learned a lot. I’m really excited now because a lot of people haven’t seen me do stuff like this before.”
