Robert Lee Ahn is seeking to be the first Korean American elected to Congress in two decades.
The election Tuesday is seen by some as measuring the growing political power of LA’s Korean American and Latino communities.
Ahn’s opponent is State Assemblyman Jimmy Gomez.
The Los Angeles Times reports both have raised about the same amount of money, with Ahn closing the gap after the primary in April.
Gomez has raised $919,000 and Ahn $871,000. Ahn has also loaned himself half a million dollars and has outspent Gomez $1.26 million to Gomez’ $743,000.
At a recent debate, Ahn painted himself as an outsider and Gomez pushed his progressive credentials, reported the Wave
“All my career, I’ve been fighting for the little guy,” said Ahn who supports a single payer health care system and who criticized his opponent for accepting $33,000 from the pharmaceutical industry. “As an attorney, I have the training to fight for health care for all.”
“I’m not afraid to stick up for the little guys,” Gomez said. “I’ll continue the fight to have affordable and continuous health care for all.”
He accused Ahn of not creating enough affordable housing during his time on the planning commission. Both Democrats criticized the presidency of Donald Trump.
