The role of Queen Liliuokalani in the upcoming movie The Islands will likely be filled by a Native Hawaiian.
KHON reports the producers have embarked on a nationwide search for a Native Hawaiian woman between the ages of 40-60 to play the role.
National and local casting agencies will begin the search June 24 though August.
No experience is necessary to apply as the producers are wiling to take a chance on new talent.
It was previously announced the movie was looking for a Native Hawaiian to play the part of King Kamehameha
“We totally understand that some Native Hawaiians are not in the industry, yet could possess great acting ability,” said a spokesperson for RiverRain Studios was discussing the role of the King.
Pacific Islander actors have been passed over of late in favor of white washing. Emma Stone played the role of a hapa in the box office flop, Aloha. More recently Zach McGowan was pegged to play real-life Native Hawaiian hero Ben Kanahele in the upcoming film NI’IHAU.
Island is scheduled to be released in November of 2018.
