You know, Hollywood’s getting there when it comes to casting Asians/Pacific Islanders/ other POC in lead roles in Hollywood films.
But, just in case it needs a little push, here’s my top ten reasons for why we need more diversity in lead roles.
- Lots of POC actors are struggling to get roles. Spread the love around, eh? We all want our big breaks.
- Some of us speak more than just English. You know. Perfect for being super spies in an action flick. Perfect for the global market.
- Not to brag, but we’re pretty good-looking. Right guys, right?
- Audiences get tired of seeing the same faces over and over again. Seeing some actors play siblings in one movie, and then lovers in the next? It’s like seeing your cousin in an awkward run-in at a family reunion.
- That tiny little thing about seeing actors that look like you onscreen. Yeah. Oh wait, no, that’s a pretty big deal.
- Seeing a variety of religions, sexualities, and races portrayed onscreen? Welcome to the future, everybody! If we keep going at this rate of progress and awesomeness, we’ll have hover-boards too.
- Aloha… Ghost in the Shell… Avatar…
- While we’re at it, how about diverse people in all roles of Hollywood too? Musicians. Directors. Writers. We have a wide range of talents; it’s magical.
- Movies reflect reality. Reality’s a collection of diverse experiences, growth, and sharing last time I checked.
- Diversity is pretty sexy.
