Hundreds of people from Chinatown in Houston attended a police forum Saturday to address the recent brazen robberies hitting their community.
Video surveillance has captured criminals following residents from banks and ATMs and then jumping them from behind as they get into their cars.
Others have been robbed as they attempted to unload groceries or shopping bags, reports KHOU.
“Everybody feels fear,” said community activist and attorney Jessica Chen who organized the meeting. “People just don’t want to go to Chinatown right now. It’s already affected the businesses and the customers of the supermarkets,” Chen told the Houston Chronicle.
Most of the victims have been women. Chen herself was a victim last summer when residents first complained to police about the rise in crime.
“We understand that this community is suffering from a plague of criminals,” said Kim Off,” Harris County District Attorney. “You have our attention and we are here to help.”
