Philanthropic giving by Chinese Americans has increased two times more than the general population, reports KPCC.
The findings from UCLA’s Luskin School of Public Affairs, the University of California, Irvine’s Long U.S.-China Institute and Asian Americans Advancing Justice LA. found giving increased 418 percent by Chinese Americans versus 195 percent overall from 2000 to 2014.
“I wanted to give back to the place where I got my knowledge and help the next generation live longer, healthier lives in a better environment,” said Ming Hsieh in an interview with the Los Angeles Times. “Education changes the world.”
Hsieh gave $35 million in 2006 to the University of Southern California electrical engineering department and $50 million to fund research to develop new cancer therapies.
“I wanted to see if it’s true that as a group, Chinese are people who don’t give back,” said John Long of the Long US-China Institute. “This study dispels the idea. We are as philanthropic if not more philanthropic than other groups.”
