Poll monitors in New York, Virginia, Massachusetts and New Jersey will be keeping a watchful eye out for voter fraud against Asian Americans today.
The action by the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund takes on added significance this year after racist mailers were sent out calling for the deportation of two Asian American school board candidates in Edison, NJ.
“Racist campaign appeals have no place in our electoral process, and they must not deter Asian American citizens from exercising their right to vote and electing candidates of their choice.”
Monitors will make a special effort be be at precincts where for the first time bilingual ballots will be required- Gujarati in Middlesex County, NJ; Chinese in Malden, MA; and Vietnamese in Fairfax County, VA.
They’ll also watch out for voter fraud in Boston where Chinese voters with limited English speaking ability were tricked into signing up for absentee ballots which were already filled out.
“They took my ballot and said on Nov. 7, on election day, I didn’t need to go vote,” said Jin-Min Cao to NBC Boston.
“Over the past two weeks, Chinatown’s elderly voters have been victims of blatant voting rights violations, this time involving absentee ballots,” said a statement released by the Chinese Progressive Association and Chinese Progressive Political Action organization to the Huffington Post.
