A suspect has been arrested in a 22-year old kidnapping case of a San Francisco Bay Area child.
Authorities escorted John Lin into San Francisco International Airport Sunday after being arrested for the kidnapping of 9-year old Kristine Chiu, reported ABC7 News.
Chiu was walking home from her school in Hillsborough, a wealthy suburb south of San Francisco when she was abducted for ransom.
The kidnappers demanded $800,000 ransom, but dropped their demands when they realized the girl’s parents were both in Taiwan.
They released her at a local hotel after holding her hostage for 9 hours.
The Mercury News reports Lin is being held on $5 million bail.
John Balocca was arrested and convicted in 1997. Authorities tracked down Lin after he applied for a passport using his real name.
Chiu’s family moved out of Hillsborough shortly after the incident.
“They were not here very long,” said Debbie Bocci who lived next door to the Chius. “They were here for a very brief period of time and as an outcome of this there’s always a police presence now at drop off and pickup at school from then on.”
A third suspect remains outstanding.
