Ocean’s 8 has been in the works for a while, but the timing for its upcoming release couldn’t have been better for the diverse cast of 8 women.
Ocean’s 8 stars Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Mindy Kaling, Rihanna, Awkwafina, Helena Bonham Carter,Sarah Paulson and Anne Hathaway.
With so much attention spawned by allegations of sexual harassment against Hollywood mega executive Harvey Weinstein and a long list of men, why not a comedic women’s take on the Ocean series that up to now has focused on the men?
Not only is it refreshing to see women in strong roles, it’s great to see Asian American rapper Awkwafina spreading her wings.
She’s had bit roles in Storks and Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, but this is her biggest role to date.
She plays a pick pocket and swindler.

Kaling is a jewelry designer focused on faux diamonds.

Oscar-nominated filmmaker Gary Ross is directing.
Ross directs from a screenplay he wrote with Olivia Milch (upcoming Dude), with Steven Soderbergh and Jon Kilik producing, Michael Tadross, Susan Ekins, Sandra Bullock, Diana Alvarez and Bruce Berman executive producing, and Milch co-producing. Filming is taking place in and around New York City.
The film is scheduled to be released June 8.
