Angela Baraquio-Grey is among 49 former Miss Americas who called for the resignation of pageant CEO Sam Haskell and two other executives after crude emails surfaced, reports Hawaii News Now.
In 2001, Baraquio-Grey became the first Asian American and Filipino American to win the pageant.
The Huffington Post reported Haskell regularly fat shamed and slut shamed former Miss Americas.
According to the Huff Post, one email chain went like this:
“I have decided that when referring to a woman who was once Miss America, we are no longer going to call them Forever Miss Americas….please change all script copy to reflect that they are Former Miss Americas!” wrote Haskell in an email in 2014 to lead pageant writer Lewis Friedman.
Friendman replied “I’d already changed “Forevers” to “Cunts.” Does that work for you?”
Haskell responded “Perfect…bahahaha.”
The Huff Post also reported two board members rubber stamped Haskell’s behavior-Tammy Haddad and Lynn Weidner.
Haskell has since been suspended by the board following the open call for his resignation from Baraquio-Grey and other other former pageant winners.
The former CEO has indicated he will fight calls for his resignation.
“Much of what was reported is dishonest, deceptive, and despicable,” wrote Haskell, in a statement. “The material is based on private emails that were stolen three years ago by ex employees. The story is so unkind and untrue, and hurts me, my family, and the stewardship of this non-profit.”
