Nathan Chen is America’s Best Shot at Figure Skating Gold in Pyeongchang proclaimed the headline in USA Today.
The US Figure Skating Championship for the men doesn’t begin until today, but clearly Chen is the heavy favorite.
Chen became all the buzz after being the first to land five quadruple jumps in a four 1/2-minute competition. He also is undefeated this season.
“I’m happy with the way things have gone,” Chen said. “I’m happy that I’m in this position. This is what I’ve wanted for a long time. I personally remind myself to embrace it.”
Chen who was born in the San Francisco Bay Area, but raised in Utah speaks a little Chinese, according to Cosmopolitan.
“My Chinese name is Chen Wei,” Nathan told isu.org. “I can speak a tiny, tiny bit, just basically get around, but I understand it decently well.”
Despite his success, he was embarrassed to pursue a sport in which women get the most attention. He’s also trained in ballet and gymnastics.
“When I watch my skating when I was younger, I definitely see all this balletic movement and this artistry come through,” Chen told Ice Network. “When I watch my artistry now, it’s like, ‘Yes, it’s still there,’ but at the same time, I’m so focused on the jumps, it takes away from it.”
