A man killed in a mysterious crash at Travis Air Force Base east of San Francisco has been identified as a Sausalito man originally from India, reports the Mercury News.
Authorities say Hafiz Kazi, 51, illegally entered the base in his Kia van on Wednesday. The vehicle caught fire as he drove up to the gate, then broke through the check point and crashed.
The FBI says Kazi has no known “nexus to terrorism.”
“Why did this individual end up at the front gate of Travis Air Base on fire and now deceased? We don’t have the answers to that,” FBI agent Sean Ragan said to KCRA.
Inside the van, investigators found five propane tanks, three plastic gas cans and lighters.
Authorities said Kazi had no known associates or religious affiliation. Investigators have been unable to locate Kazi’s family.
Fox 40 reported there are no current threats to the base. It’s unknown if Kazi died in the crash or before.
Sources described Kazi to ABC News as a “vagabond” and “nomad.”
