California Senator Kamala Harris told MSNBC that she isn’t ruling out a 2020 Presidential Bid during an interview that aired on the network’s show “KacieDC” on Sunday.
In the interview, Sen. Harris told host Kacie Hunt that she is currently focusing on the 2018 midterm elections and prioritizing “a lot of other things” besides running for president. However, when Hunt asked if she was ruling out the possibility of running in 2020, Sen. Harris said, “I’m not ruling it out, no.”
Hunt’s report for MSNBC noted that Sen. Harris has begun to “carve out a reputation as a defender of immigrants in the Trump era” and argued that this could help her appeal to voters in 2020. Hunt also noted that, unlike other possible Democratic candidates (Senator Bernie Sanders, Senator Elizabeth Warren, and Senator Cory Booker), Sen. Harris voted no on an immigration compromise that she felt made too many compromises with Republicans. On Friday, Sen. Harris visited immigrant mothers Otay Mesa Immigration and Detention Facility near San Diego.
Sen. Harris has been included on several lists of possible Democratic presidential candidates. In March, The Washington Post ranked Harris fourth in its list of top 15 presidential candidates. Aaron Blake, who wrote the list for The Washington Post, noted that Harris has been “making the kind of visits you would expect from a 2020 hopeful,” traveling to states like Nevada and Michigan.
For now, as Sen. Harris told MSNBC, she will focus her attention on the upcoming 2018 midterm elections.
