Police in New York accuse a firefighter of destroying a cashier’s computer after a billing dispute at the Empire Wok on Castle Hill in New York City, reports the New York Daily News.
The cashier and the firefighter began arguing over the check. A relative of the restaurant owner told the newspaper he purchased $7 worth of food and had demanded his money back.
Raw Story reports off-duty firefighter Harold Mendoza was dissatisfied with his meal and returned it.
When the cashier refunded the $7, witnesses say the firefighter demanded $10.
When he received that, with the money still in his hands, police say he began smashing the computer screen, damaging it.
Damage is estimated at $2,000.
“He had the $10 in his hand and he started banging his keys on the screen,” said a relative of the owner to the Daily News. “The fact that he’s a firefighter makes it hurt so much more. The assumption is that they’re pretty honorable people.”
Mendoza works in the Bronx at the Engine 82/Ladder 31 firehouse.
