A defendant in the murder of a University of Southern California grad student has been sentenced to life in prison while a second defendant received 15 years to life in prison, reports ABC7 News.
The two were sentenced Friday in the 2014 murder of Xinran Ji who died in a baseball bat attack as he walked to his apartment. The incident sparked international news coverage and sent fear all the way back to China , especially among parents considering sending their children overseas for school.
Defendant Alejandra Guerrero was just 16 at the time of the incident.
“I am so sorry and I pray that one day they could forgive me,” she said in court, according to ABC7.
Both Guerrero and co-defendant Jonathan Del Carmen had earlier entered guilty pleas. Del Carmen also apologized prior to being sentenced.
Andrew Garcia received a life sentence for the murder last year. A fourth defendant is still awaiting trial.
