Police arrested a 17-year-old boy Friday in the death of a restaurant owner making his last delivery of the night, reports ABC7.
Authorities in Patterson, New Jersey took the teen into custody for the death of Rui Zhou, 29.
Prosecutors say he the suspect approached Zhou’s car as the victim sat in the driver’s seat and his wife was by his side.
The suspect allegedly took a gun out and demanded cash. A struggle followed. Zhou tried to drive away, but crashed his vehicle a short time later. His wife was unhurt.
The 17-year old is charged with acts of delinquency which includes first-degree murder, first-degree felony murder, robbery and unlawful possession of a weapon.
The incident has sparked fear among delivery drivers who characterize their job as dangerous.
“I think that this area is not good, so I stopped doing it. I don’t want to do it anymore,” a former deliveryman told News12.
The couple bought Ming’s Kitchen just a few months ago and who lived above the restaurant.
The name of the suspect has not been released because he is a minor.
