Crazy Rich Asians’ Ken Jeong and Jon M. Chu will have a happy reunion—Jeong has enlisted Chu to direct his new Netflix stand-up special, reports The Hollywood Reporter.
Tentatively titled Ken Jeong: First Date, Jeong will take the stage to discuss his transition from medical doctor to comedian and other personal topics, like how his wife’s battle with breast cancer led to him starring in The Hangover (2009). Jeong will executive produce his project with Brett Carducci, reports Deadline.
Filming is set to take place September 15 at the venue where Jeong got his start—the Ice House Comedy Club in Pasadena, California. The special is set to premiere in 2019.
“I am thrilled to work with Jon again, and his brilliant cinematic eye will capture the energy and excitement of my first stand-up special,” said Jeong.
This project will be Chu’s first time directing a comedy special. Chu is now busier than ever—according to The Hollywood Reporter, Chu will get to work on the sequel to Crazy Rich Asians after completing his adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Broadway hit, In the Heights, which is scheduled for release on June 26, 2020.
Crazy Rich Asians earned $80 million domestically in just two weeks. The movie has paved the way for a future in Hollywood with more Asians in leading roles.
In Crazy Rich Asians, Jeong plays Wye Mun Goh, father of Peik Lin (Awkwafina). Jeong starred in Dr. Ken, which he created, wrote, and executive produced. He is also known for his role as Ben Chang in Community and as Leslie Chow in The Hangover film series.
