The trailer for new animated film Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors features the next generation of Marvel heroes: a diverse crew of superteens, reports Yahoo Entertainment. The clip opens with a conversation between Pakistani American Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel) and Doreen Green (Squirrel Girl) and shows the formation of their unofficial team of young heroes.
The teenage supers include: Rayshaun Lucas (Patriot), an African American with powers similar to Captain America’s; Dante Pertuz (Inferno), a Latino mutant who can manipulate flames; America Chavez, a Latina American who can fly and has superhuman strength; and S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Daisy Johnson (Quake), who can produce powerful earthquake-like vibrations. Kamala Khan is played by Kathreen Khavari, who was born to Iranian immigrant parents and raised in Oakland, CA. According to Wikipedia, she once wore a dress to the premier of Big Little Lies which read, “My Iranian Mother Teaches Your Kids How to Read.” Her YouTube channel has featured satirical sketches on social justice issues including Islamophobia.
In addition to the diversity of the animated characters, some the voice actors themselves are reflective of the racial backgrounds of the heroes: America Chavez is voiced by Cierra Ramirez, Quake by Chloe Bennet, Inferno by Tyler Posey, and Patriot by Kamil McFadden.
Hasbro has also unveiled a new line of dolls of the teen superheroes, available exclusively at Target starting October, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors will premiere on Disney Channel and Disney XD on September 30 at 10 pm ET.
