Andi Mack, a show that defied Hollywood stereotypes in both its plot and casting, will air its third season next month, on October 8. The show also released an exclusive clip from its latest season to Entertainment Weekly in its announcement.
Peyton Lee, who plays the starring role as Andi Mack, is half Chinese on her father’s side, who is also an actor. She was born in New York City, and her acting career began when she moved to California at age 10.
The show premiered in April 2017 with 12 episodes. Its second season aired in October 2017 with 25 episodes. The plot was lauded as “history” by The Washington Post after it delved into the coming out of a gay middle school boy (Andi’s close friend, Cyrus Goodman). Another surprise in the plot is that Bex, who was first introduced as Andi’s older sister, is actually her mother.
Season two ended with Andi saying farewell to her longtime crush Jonah as he headed off to summer camp. The first episode of the third season is titled, “The Boys Are Back”; Andi is unsure how she feels about Jonah after a summer apart. Adding to the drama, her best friend, Buffy, has started dating someone new.
The show is co-produced by Terri Minsky, who is also the creator behind Disney’s hit series, Lizzie McGuire.
