Emmy-nominated writer and actress Mindy Kaling discussed self-confidence issues at the Glamour Women of the Year Summit in New York City, CNBC reports. Kaling participated in a panel called Closing the Dream Gap: Showing Girls (and Ourselves) What’s Next with Today show hosts Hoda Kobt and Savannah Guthrie on Sunday, according to Glamour.
Kaling told the panel that confidence was the key to her professional success. Confidence, however, doesn’t come naturally for Kaling. She told Guthrie and Kobt that it troubles her that we are teaching young girls they have to be innately confident.
“We tell young women…to be confident, be confident, and to just grasp it out of thin air, and I think that’s confusing,” Kaling said.
Growing up Kaling said she didn’t have to worry much about what boys thought of her. According to CNBC, Kaling said she knew boys thought she was ugly. She added that this helped put her on the path she is on now. Being ignored allowed her to focus on gaining confidence and asking for things in her professional career.
Today, Kaling’s confidence comes from her preparation and work ethic.
“I always just did the leg work, and it meant I never came to anything unprepared,” Kaling said, according to Glamour. “The only reason I was able to be confident was because I literally couldn’t not be confident with the amount of research and preparation I did.”
Kaling believes that her confidence in her preparation is “key to everything in her life.”
