One week after rapper Lil Pump ignited an internet backlash after he released a racist video promoting his upcoming single, the singer took to Instagram to apologize.
“Hey, what’s up everybody,” Lil Pump said on Christmas Day. “I came her to tell you guys that I’ve seen the whole thing going on the internet and all that. I’m sorry and I apologize for the post and that.”
In the original offensive post also released on Instagram, Lil Pump used a slant-eye gesture and the slur “ching chong,” a term used to derisively refer to Asians. “They call me Yao Ming cause my eyes real low,” he said in the original video as he pulls down on his eyelids. That post has since been removed.
“It was not my intentions to hurt anybody or do any of that,” he said in his apology. “I got Asian homies, you know. I got nothing against nobody. Its all love. I want everybody to have a Merry Christmas and spread love and positivity.”
The offensive post caught the attention of Asian American rappers China Mac and Awkwafina, who both called on him to remove the offending post.
“We’re not letting this die down,” said China Mac. “We feel disrespected by that post and we need that sh*t taken down.”
China Mac commended Lil Pump for his apology.
