It’s turning into quite a night for Asian representation at the Golden Globes. Two Asians won in the acting category and Bohemian Rhapsody, the story of Indian British Parsi rocker, Freddy Mercury of Queen fame, won for best movie drama.
Sandra Oh, the night’s co-host and the star of BBC America’s Killing Eve won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a drama.
Her parents were on hand to watch her accept the award. She closed her acceptance speech by thanking them both, and giving them a respectful bow from the stage.

Darren Criss won for Best Actor in a Limited Series for
his portrayal of Andrew Cunanan in FX’s The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.
Criss has been criticized in the past for not acknowledging his Filipino American roots, but he thanked his mom who is from Cebu in the Philippines and said he’s happy to be part of the diversity being represented at the Globes.

This is on the heels of an Emmy win in September for the same role.

The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story also received a Globe for Best Mini-series or TV film.

In addition to Best Drama, Bohemian Rhapsody also received honors in the acting category. Rami Malek, who starred as Freddie Mercury, won for best performance by an actor in a motion picture. The American is of Egyptian and Greek ethnicity.
Earlier, Oh acknowledged the significance of being an Asian woman hosting a high profile award show.
“I wanted to be here to look out into this audience & witness this moment of change…Right now, this moment is real. Trust me, it is real. Because I see you & I see you: All of these faces of change and now so will everyone else,” said Oh to applause.
Earlier in her opening monologue with Andy Samberg, Oh joked “Crazy Rich Asians is the first studio film with an Asian American lead since Ghost in the Shell and Aloha.

Later Emma Stone came out to present an award, but did not address the controversy. She did, however, reportedly scream while off camera “I’m sorry” from the audience after Oh’s joke about whitewashing.
Unfortunately, Constance Wu of Crazy Rich Asians loss in the Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy category to Olivia Coleman in The Favourite. The Greenbook beat out Crazy Rich Asians for Best Musical or Comedy.
