Pixar Short Film “Float” to Feature First-ever Filipino Leads

Director Bobby Rubio announced on Twitter that he will write and direct the Pixar short film Float, which features Filipino lead characters. To describe Pixar’s first ever Filipino leads, Rubio coined the term “Pixnoy,” which combines Pixar and pinoy, a person of Filipino origin or descent.

Rubio has worked on several notable animated films and series, according to CNN Philippines. These works include Tarzan, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Up. Rappler also reports that Rubio is “known for working on Marvel covers and creating the comic series Alcatraz High and 4 Gun Conclusion.

Other Filipino Americans have shared their excitement on Twitter, and Rubio has shared some of their tweets on his own Twitter page.

Rubio wrote on Twitter that he is “so grateful to tell our stories. I know what it means to be underrepresented and I hope that my #Pixar #SparkShort #FLOAT will inspire more #Filipino #American stories to come! I’m going to do my best to tell MORE!”
