Kal Penn Comedy Pilot Gets Green Light from NBC

NBC has given Kal Penn the green light to begin working on the pilot of his new comedy series, Deadline reports. The comedy will be shot on a single-camera in New York City with Penn serving as both actor, writer, and executive producer.

According to VultureMike Shur, creator/producer of The Good Place, will also serve as executive producer. Penn will write alongside Matt Murray, who has written for Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Good Place, and Parks and Recreation.

The show does not yet have a title. Vulture has described it as an immigration comedy that will be set in New York City. Penn will star as former New York City Councilman Garrett Shah, who “finds his calling when faced with six recent immigrants in need of his help and in search of the American Dream.” Penn’s own parents are Gujarati Indian immigrants who moved to America to pursue the American Dream.

Penn tweeted his thanks to NBC and announced the news to his followers.
