A White man is facing a hate crime charge after throwing hot coffee and punching a Sikh clerk at a 7-Eleven in Marysville, California, reports CBS Local.
Marysville police say that John Crain had reportedly tried to leave the store without paying. When confronted by the 7-Eleven clerk, Crain threw a pot of hot coffee at him before punching him in the face, according to surveillance footage published by the Sacramento Bee. Police say the victim suffered burn injuries from the hot coffee and contusion on his face.
During questioning, Crain revealed he “hated Muslims and assaulted the victim because he believed he was Muslim,” according to KCRA. Crain has been booked into the Yuba County Jail on theft, assault and hate crime charges.
