The last fortune cookie is in danger of crumbling in San Francisco.
The San Francisco Chronicle is reporting the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory may have to close due to rising rents.
According to the BBC, the rent has gone from $1400 to $6,000 in three years.
“I’m worried about the future right now,” owner Kevin Chan said to the Chronicle. “I don’t know what to do.”
The last remaining fortune cookie factory in San Francisco has been a tourist attraction for years in Chinatown. It’s hidden away in an alley, perhaps adding to its mystique.
Chan says the cookies are made by hand and made from his mother’s secret recipe. He contends machine-made cookies just aren’t the same.
“It’s hard,” he said to the BBC. “Old school doesn’t exist in today’s technology. But I’m determined to keep the traditions going.”
