A Rikers inmate convicted for stealing $300,000 from an elderly couple has managed to get through to Mayor Bill de Blasio for the second time in two months, but this time just barely, reports the NY Post.

Winston Nguyen spoke to the New York mayor on his radio program on WNYC. Calls from prison are subject to a time limit. As Nguyen spoke to the mayor, an automated voice interrupted “you have one minute.” A short while later, the call cut off in the middle of his conversation.

Nguyen asked the mayor why Rikers has a program for mothers to visit their children, but not fathers.

“We were focused on moms because there’s a particular need there, but I think it’s a great idea to take it farther,” the mayor replied.

Two months ago, Nguyen got through on the radio program to complain about prison conditions at Rikers.

“We have a leaky roof, broken windows with garbage bags taped over them and it’s 20 degrees in here,” Nguyen would say later to the Post.

Since the complaint, the mayor has taken ten beds out of each housing unit to alleviate overcrowding.
