Haltom City, Texas has elected its first Vietnamese American Mayor, WFAA reports. Dr. An Minh Truong, who came to the United States when he was 26, will be sworn in on Monday.
Truong received 60 percent of the vote in Haltom City. Around 4 percent of the city’s population is Vietnamese American.
According to NBC Dallas-Fort Worth, he previously served as a city council member. He became a Fort Worth police officer in the 1980s and later served as an investigator for 37 years.
Troung is the city’s first-ever Vietnamese American mayor in Tarrant County and possibly the first ever Vietnamese American mayor in Texas, WFAA reports.
“I’m so proud for myself, my family, and…for the Vietnamese American society as a whole,” Truong told WFAA Tuesday.
