Lea Salonga, the singing voice of Jasmine in Disney’s 1992 Aladdin, shared her opinion on the live action 2019 revival on social media.
According to ABS-CBN, on Facebook Salonga said, “For all that’s been said about the new live action Aladdin, even without seeing the movie, my takeaway is this: a movie set in a fictional city in the Middle East starring all shades of brown people and making beaucoup bucks at the box office can only be a good thing.”
She adds,” If this aids in changing the way we as outsiders view this part of the world and people from there, it will be all worth it.”
Aladdin opened in cinemas on May 22 and crushed the box office, earning $207 million worldwide since its debut, according to Fox News. Facing competitors Brightburn and Booksmart, which also opened Memorial Day weekend, Aladdin took the top spot at the North American box office, faring better than it’s expected $90 million pre-release tracking.
Will Smith, Mena Massoud, and Naomi Scott star as the main characters in this film. It was directed by Guy Ritchie.
In a tweet, Salonga praised Scott’s recording of the song “Speechless”, a new song in the Aladdin original soundtrack.
“First of all… YES, Naomi Scott! Second of all… YES, Menken and Pasek & Paul! Couldn’t help but feel myself getting all up in my feelings listening to this brand new song for the live action Aladdin. I may need to test my vocal cords with,” she wrote on Twitter.
